o matter what the more
unscrupulous auto electrician will
tell you, the best way of joining
any wires will always be good old
fashioned soldering. The trouble with most
automotive jobs though, is that they’re
done on the car and, unless you’re driving
a Nissan Leaf, you generally don’t park
right next to a plug socket.
A simple soldering iron is a bona fide
toolbox essential but that doesn’t mean
they can always be called versatile. Their
problem is they use a lot of power because
they need to get properly hot, so
traditionally they come with a long cable
and plug into the wall.
There are butane-gas-powered irons on
the market of course but who can be
bothered with going to find gas to fill
them up all the time? Or wants to leave
one in their glovebox for that matter?
The best solution for car wiring is a
battery-powered iron and, although we’ve
seen a few on the market over the years,
they’re usually relatively expensive
(anything from £20-65) for someone who
won’t useit regularly. Some are not too hot
in the quality department either.
That’s where this item from Silverline
comes in. They say this will rival plenty of
the top-level pro kits out there but will cost
you a lot less than you’d think. That’s got
to be worth a look.
First of all Silverline is an established,
universally-trusted tool brand so we
already know that they won’t sell anything
without it being good quality. The firm
offers a lifetime guarantee on their tools
after all. That said, it’s still something of a
surprise at just how good this one is for
the money; there’s not a lot you can get
for under £8 nowadays but this feels
reassuringly heavy (with the batteries in)
and solid.
The replaceable iron-plated tip is perfect
for both standard wiring and intricate
electronics and the switch is a well-
thought-out addition. You have to
physically slide it up and hold in the button
for heating and this can be locked off with
the safety cap meaning there’s no chance
of it activating in your pocket and roasting
your family jewels, which is nice.
This one also provides a useful 8 Watts
of power, more than enough for most
common jobs, and it even comes with a
little reel of solder to get you on your way.
You can’t say fairer than that can you?
VERDICT: Safe, effective
I’m a self-confessed gadget freak when it
comes to tools, whether I need it or not I
want it, especially if it’s at an irresistible
price. The great thing about this funky little
piece of engineering though is that I will
definitely need it at some point, and so will
you. Maybe not today, maybe not
tomorrow but that day will come and it’ll
be right there in the car no matter where I
am – possibly saving a few quid (on
getting in a specialist) along the way. That,
dear DIY-ist, gives me a warm fuzzy feeling
inside.
The key things here are versatility and
price. Being cordless firstly you can get it to
your car without the need for an extension
lead which is handy. Perhaps more
importantly though, is the access it
provides when you get there – this one is
compact enough for interior jobs like
stereos and general wiring along with
important repairs on the move.
I like the fact that it heats up fast,
taking around 10 seconds to get up to
working temperature and cools back down
in about half a minute.
I bench-tested this one with decent
Duracell batteries and they provided
continuous power for well over an hour,
more than anyone should ever need for
soldering in 30-second bursts. A properly
useful bit of kit.
